This past Wednesday, the Dems held a rally to show student support for health care reform that ensures coverage for all Americans. We heard from Dr. K.J. Lee, a renowned ear, nose, and throat doctor and health care policy advisor, who urged us to fight for reform and listed some ways that our health care system can be made more efficient. After the rally, we called Sen. Joe Lieberman to tell him why it’s imperative that he support comprehensive health care reform, and why it matters to us as college students.

May They Please Speak With Joe?
Over Parents Weekend, the Dems held their annual fundraiser, the proceeds of which support Dems activities throughout the year such as lobbying trips and elections activities. This year, New Haven State Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield spoke eloquently about the important role of the work that the Dems do. Also in attendance were Mayor John DeStefano, Ward 22 Alderman Greg Moorehead, and numerous Dems parents and siblings.
If you couldn’t make it to the fundraiser, you can always make an online donation to the Dems.
At the first event in a semester-long push for education reform in New Haven, the Yale College Democrats hosted panel of education experts to discuss the upcoming reform efforts.
Panelists shared their thoughts on the prospects for reform, and what kinds of reform have proven the most effective. Garth Harries, Assistant Superintendent of the New Haven Public Schools and Yale alum, discussed his work in the New York City school reform effort. Ward 1 alderwoman and Yale alum Rachel Plattus brought a political take, and New Haven principals Dolores Garcia-Blocker of Co-Op Arts and Humanities High School and Lizanne Cox of Common Ground High school gave on-the-ground insights about how reform directly impacts teachers.
