On Monday, April 2, the Yale College Democrats (along with the Black Student Alliance at Yale and Branford College) hosted a Master’s Tea with Rep. Jim Clyburn, the Assistant Democratic Leader in the House of Representatives and the former House Majority Whip.
Rep. Clyburn, who entered Congress in 1993, spoke to more than thirty students about a variety of issues, including the 2012 elections, the new healthcare reform law and subsequent case before the Supreme Court, and the new voter ID laws that have passed in many states. ”You can be no more or no less than what your experiences allow you to be,” Rep. Clyburn stated, urging students to expose themselves to people with different life experiences than their own.
Rep. Clyburn also had some advice specifically for college students: “Students should get involved in something that is extra-career.”
